Sources: Stoke City beat Sheffield Wednesday to Luke McNally deal as medical passed
Stoke City have agreed a loan deal for Burnley defender Luke McNally, sources have told Football Insider.
McNally has passed a medical at the Championship outfit and will make the move to the Potters on a season-long loan deal.
Stoke have beaten off interest from the likes of Coventry, Millwall, Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City for the Irish defender.
The 23-year-old found himself down the pecking order at Burnley and he spent the second half of last season on loan at Coventry City.
McNally played 21 times in the Championship last season, with just two of those outings coming for Burnley.
He subsequently went out on loan to Coventry and played a key role for Mark Robins’ side as they fell short at the final hurdle in the play-off final against Luton.
The defender started all 22 games he was eligible for during his temporary spell at the CBS Arena – playing the full game in each of those outings.
McNally only joined Burnley from Oxford United last summer (2022), signing a contract which runs until June 2026.
He caught the eye of the Clarets after impressing in his first full season in England during the 2021-22 campaign.
After coming across from Irish side St Patrick’s Athletic in January 2021, the centre-back managed four goals and one assist in 35 outings for Oxford United – earning a move to Turf Moor.
Stoke have been busy in the summer window after registering a 16th-place finish in the 2022-23 campaign.
The Potters have made no fewer than 10 signings since the end of last season.

Stoke City sign Luke McNally on season-long loan from Burnley
Stoke City has successfully secured the signing of former Republic of Ireland youth international and defender, Luke McNally, on a season-long loan from Burnley.
The 23-year-old player spent the second half of the 2022/23 campaign with Coventry City.
McNally significantly contributed to the Sky Blues’ solid defensive record, keeping ten clean sheets in 22 Championship matches and helping the club reach the play-off final in May.
In his early career, McNally claimed the Young Player of the Year awards during his time with Drogheda United and St Patrick’s Athletic in Ireland.
His performance caught the attention of English clubs, leading him to Oxford United, where he made 35 appearances. He then moved to Burnley under Vincent Kompany’s management last summer.
Ricky Martin, Stoke City’s Technical Director, expressed his satisfaction with the signing, stating, “Luke is a player we have been interested in for some time, having initially made contact with Burnley in January.”
He added, “We weren’t surprised to see Luke consistently perform at a high level in the Championship during his loan at Coventry and we are delighted to have now recruited him at a time when he will only be better for that experience. Luke carries strong physical attributes, is comfortable in possession and displays impressive tactical understanding of the game.”
McNally himself has expressed his eagerness to work under Stoke City’s manager, Alex Neil.
“The manager fills me with belief that he will help me to develop as a player and that the trajectory of the Club is going in the right direction,” said McNally.
He also commented on how he had been impressed coming up against Stoke during his time at Coventry. He believes the club has a “massive” scope and sees it as a great opportunity for his career growth.
McNally becomes Stoke City’s 11th summer signing.

Bristol Rovers have signed defender Connor Taylor from Stoke City on a three-year deal.
The 21-year-old, who was previously on loan at Rovers during the 2021-22 season, made 14 appearances for the Potters in the Championship last season.
“We are delighted to welcome Taylor back,” Rovers boss Joey Barton said.
“It’s no secret that we’ve been trying to get him back with us sooner – I’m sure he will be worth the wait.”
During his loan spell at Memorial Stadium Taylor was a key member of Rovers’ promotion winning side, playing in 47 games – of which he started 41 – and scoring three goals for them in League Two.
“Connor is a top player, a great character and all the boys were happy to see him back,” Barton added.
“He is a great addition and will strengthen us further as we start our 2023-24 League One campaign on Saturday away at Portsmouth.”

Stoke City revelation on £5m-rated Leicester City player revealed
Stoke City enquired about securing a loan deal for Daniel Iversen. Iversen, who has worked with Stoke manager Alex Neil before, has struggled to secure a starting spot at Leicester. He is now surplus to requirements but the Foxes are still demanding £5m for him.
Stoke City enquired about a potential loan deal for Leicester City goalkeeper Daniel Iversen but that was rejected by officials at the King Power Stadium, according to the Daily Mail.
Alex Neil has worked with the Danish shot-stopper before from their time together at Preston North End – and the 26-year-old was consistently impressive during his time between the sticks at Deepdale.
Unfortunately for the keeper, he was unable to nail down a starting spot at his current side, even though he did play in the Premier League for the Foxes last term.
He only made 12 league appearances for the Foxes during the 2022/23 campaign though and that isn’t enough for a player who will want to be starting every week.
What is Leicester City’s stance on Daniel Iversen’s future?
The Daily Mail believes Iversen is surplus to requirements in the Midlands – and that isn’t a shock considering Mads Hermansen has been brought in by Enzo Maresca.
Danny Ward and Alex Smithies are available as options and this could also limit Iversen’s game time at the King Power Stadium during the upcoming campaign.
With this, he has seemingly been made available by Maresca who could use the money they generate from his sale to strengthen his squad further.
How much will Daniel Iversen cost?
Iversen has attracted plenty of interest in the past – and his contract doesn’t expire until the summer of 2025.
These two factors combined have allowed them to demand around £5m for his signature, although it’s unclear whether any club would be willing to meet that valuation considering he wasn’t a regular starter at the King Power Stadium last term.
He didn’t go out on loan for a chunk of the 2022/23 campaign either, so he only had a very limited opportunity to impress between the sticks.
If the Foxes are keen to cash in on him this summer, they will probably need to lower his price tag, although the fact the player still has two years left on his deal does put them in a strong negotiating position and they will look to generate as much revenue from his sale as possible.
Would Daniel Iversen have been a good signing for Stoke City?
They enquired about taking Iversen on loan before signing Mark Travers, so he would have been a great signing for the Potters if they had managed to get that deal over the line.
Considering the Potters haven’t signed a ridiculous number of loanees yet either, taking Iversen on a temporary deal would have been acceptable, especially when you consider how high his price tag is.
He has proved himself in the English second tier before and already knows Neil extremely well, so it probably wouldn’t have taken him a long time to adapt to life at the bet365 Stadium.
But the signing of Travers is just as impressive – because he has promotion-winning experience under his belt and that can only benefit a Stoke side that will be hoping to be in the promotion mix next year.
Their transfer business between now and the end of the window may determine where they are aiming to finish – but promotion has to be the main goal despite falling well short in recent seasons.
