The football world is in mourning over the death of a cherished player.

Jessie Lemonier, a former outside linebacker for the Detroit Lions, died on Jan. 26 at the age of 25, the organization said. The reason of death has not been made public.

“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of former Detroit Lion Jessie Lemonier,” the Lions announced in a statement released via Twitter and Instagram. “Jessie was a fantastic teammate and a wonderful young man who left us far too soon.” During this terrible moment, our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

Jessie, a native of Florida, appeared in seven games for the Lions in 2021. He began his career with the Liberty Flames of Virginia before being signed by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020. Jessie was recently recruited by the minor league XFL but ultimately chose to sign with the USFL, according to NBC Sports.

Drew Smith, Jessie’s agent, confirmed to ESPN that the athlete and his fiancée are expecting a child together.

Many fans and fellow athletes flocked to social media to mourn Jessie’s loss, including Russell Wilson, who posted the Lions’ tribute on his Instagram Story along with three prayer hand emojis.

Breiden Fehoko, Jessie’s buddy and fellow football player, also paid tribute to the late star on social media.

“My brother man,” Breiden wrote on Twitter. “We came in to the league together had to battle through everything rookie year to get where we are.”

“You were always filled with life bro,” he went on to say. “I LOVE YOU BRO!”
