Broncos hooker given permission to look for a new home

Two Sydney clubs have expressed interest in him.

Cory Paix of the Brisbane Broncos has been given permission to leave the club and to engage with rival clubs.

The revelation comes after the 23-year-old struggled to get consistent minutes at Red Hill and was dropped from the 17-man roster earlier this year in favor of other players such as Tyson Smoothy.

It is also quite doubtful that he will return and compete for a spot on the squad, given how well the Broncos performed last season, reaching the season finale.

According to News Corp, the Broncos leadership will not prevent Paix from departing the club for a new home in the NRL. This came after his boss granted him permission to investigate his possibilities.

According to News Corp, Paix has piqued the interest of two separate Sydney-based clubs, and it is believed that he met with Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson in August. They have yet to offer him an official contract for the following season.

“We’ve been given permission to look around,” Paul Hogan, his agent, told the outlet.

“There has been some interest from Sydney, but it depends on whether Cory is willing to relocate.” His preference is to remain with the Broncos; he adores the team and only recently inked a two-year deal.

“Cory recently got engaged, is on his off-season break, and we’re meeting up this week to talk about his options.”

“He is signed until the end of 2025 at the Broncos and is settled in Brisbane off the field, it’s just a shame he’s not playing regularly in the NRL.”

Paix, who was formerly considered one of the greatest young Queensland prospects, has fallen down the club’s pecking order, trailing Billy Walters, Tyson Smoothy, and Blake Mozer.

This started when he was dropped in favor of Smoothy after playing 14 consecutive games off the bench this season and was ruled out of the 2023 Grand Final versus the Panthers.

While Walters and Smoothy are the anticipated starters for the club’s one-two punch next season, one of them will almost certainly make way for Blake Mozer.

Mozer has been dubbed the “future of the Brisbane number nine jersey,” and he is coming off a breakout season in which he represented Queensland in the Under-19s State of Origin.

“Cory is OK mentally, but obviously he’s a bit frustrated that he didn’t play a lot of NRL football this year,” he said.

“‘Kevvie’ would like to see him run more, but it’s difficult when he has to feed Brisbane’s main playmakers, Adam Reynolds, Ezra Mam, and Reece Walsh.”

“His service is exceptional, his passing game is first class, so hopefully Cory can find his way back to the NRL, either at the Broncos or somewhere else.”
