Football at Virginia Tech: Brent Pry’s injury update presents a bleak picture

This weekend, the Virginia Tech football team will play the Eagles in a crucial game at Boston College. In terms of the Hokies’ need for a victory to get one step closer to bowl eligibility, this game is crucial.

The Hokies will face a Boston College offense led by Thomas Castellanos, a talented dual-threat quarterback who has been difficult for opponents to stop over the past five weeks. The game will be played at Alumni Stadium.

Brent Pry’s defense in Chestnut Hill will need all hands on deck, but on Tuesday, the head coach in his second year provided an unimpressive update regarding two defensive players who are injured.

When providing a defense-related injury update, Brent Pry lacked confidence.
Josh Fuga, the defensive tackle, and safety Jalen Stroman of Virginia Tech were both hurt before last weekend’s game in Louisville, which Virginia Tech lost 34-3. In the game against the Cardinals, both players played a portion of it but did not complete it, and Pry’s update during his weekly press conference did not sound encouraging.

The Eagles have amassed enormous offensive numbers in terms of plays run, so getting off the field will be crucial. Things will become even more challenging if the Hokies sustain any injuries.

Even though the Virginia Tech football team lost 34-3 at Louisville on Saturday, they are still 4-5 and can still qualify for a bowl game. The difficult part of the Hokies’ path to six wins and bowl eligibility is that they will need to accomplish something that they haven’t done this season—win a game away from Lane Stadium—at least once, if not twice.

This season, Brent Pry’s team has played four road games and suffered four losses, all in fairly similar ways. They give up too many big plays to make up for the deficit they dig themselves into. There are still three games left: this weekend at Boston College and Thanksgiving weekend at Virginia. An extremely difficult home game against North Carolina State is scheduled in between.

Virginia Tech needs to win at least one game away from home in order to qualify for a bowl game. The Hokies are slated for two different bowl destinations according to ESPN’s most recent bowl projections.
