How much did Adam Forshaw make each week at Leeds United before joining Norwich?

Football League World examines former Leeds United midfielder Adam Forshaw’s salary after his move to Norwich City.

Adam Forshaw, a former Leeds United midfielder, has joined Norwich City.

After spending much of the summer as a free agent, the 31-year-old has signed a one-year contract with the Canaries and previous promotion-winning boss David Wagner.

Forshaw was named on the Whites’ released list earlier this summer, but the club did state that he, along with teammate Joel Robles, would be called back for pre-season training if he didn’t find a new club.

According to The Daily Mail, in the midst of this, Saudi Arabia Pro League team Al-Akhdoud were believed to have offered him a lucrative contract, with the midfielder weighing his options.

According to the source, he had interest in his services from rival Championship clubs as well as some European clubs throughout the summer.

However, he has now been confirmed by Norwich, potentially leaving the Whites short on midfield alternatives after the departures of Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams, and Marc Roca.

However, Forshaw’s participation at West Yorkshire has been limited owing to recurring injury difficulties, and it is still unknown how much playing time he will be able to win at Carrow Road as well.

Who exactly is Adam Forshaw?

The Whites signed the central midfielder from Middlesbrough in January 2018 for a rumored cost of about £4.5 million.

Prior to his release, the 31-year-old had spent five-and-a-half seasons at Elland Road but had been plagued by injuries. Forshaw has only made 91 appearances for Leeds during his stint with the club.

Forshaw has never scored a goal for Leeds, however he has three assists. He leaves the club on good terms after being a key member of the team that won promotion under Marcelo Bielsa in the 2019/2020 season.

The midfielder’s game time at Leeds has dramatically decreased, which may explain why he has decided to go, having featured just 13 times in all competitions last season as Leeds were relegated to the Championship.

Forshaw has struggled for regular playing time in recent years, but he is still a seasoned player. He has played 123 games in the Championship, 89 games in League One, and 69 games in the Premier League.

That was enough to pique the interest of a number of clubs in the second tier this summer.

What was Adam Forshaw’s salary at Leeds United?

Leeds haven’t raised many transfer fees this summer, but they have worked hard to reduce their wage bill from last season, with all of Tyler Roberts, Alfie McCalmont, Robin Koch, Diego Llorente, Brenden Aaronson, Rasmus Kristensen, Rodrigo, Joel Robles, Max Wober, Marc Roca, Jack Harrison, and Forshaw departing.

Forshaw’s arrival at Elland Road many years ago in the Championship signaled that he would not be a large earner, and according to Capology estimates, Leeds’ former central-midfielder earned roughly £20,000 per week.

Although this figure is an estimate, it is unclear how relegation from the Premier League will have affected the deal, with Phil Hay of The Athletic reporting that “Leeds are protected by significant clauses inserted into every player’s contract, which will see wages fall by a minimum of 50% and a maximum of 60%” in the event of relegation.

Forshaw’s total gross wage each year was set at about £1.04 million before tax, making him one of the lowest earners in the Elland Road first-team squad.

Rodrigo and Harrison were the club’s top earners last season, but with both now gone, Junior Firpo, Luis Sinisterra, Georginio Rutter, and Patrick Bamford are the only players that earn more than £55,000 per week for the Whites, according to their estimates.
