A slew of players could depart Elland Road again next summer.
Leeds United had a large squad exodus last summer, and while different factors will be at play this time, the Whites may have to say goodbye to a number of players come June.
With up to ten Leeds players out of contract next year, we decided to look at them, their current situation, and whether they can realistically be expected to stay with the club…
Cody Drameh
Cody Drameh’s chances of agreeing to new terms at Elland Road are nil.
For one reason or another, the young right-back has often cut a peripheral figure and has failed to produce the same results for Leeds as he did while on loan with Cardiff City and Luton Town.
Drameh came on and then came off in the final 21 minutes of last weekend’s 4-3 triumph over Ipswich Town, and he has just returned from his third loan spell, this time to Birmingham City.
Make no mistake, it will be his final game from Leeds.
Koch, Robin
Similarly, German international Robin Koch is currently on loan at Leeds United but will not be returning.
Koch, one of many high-profile players who left Leeds following their relegation to the Championship, is back on loan in his native Germany with Eintracht Frankfurt, and with his contract scheduled to expire next summer, he will leave Leeds permanently.
Mr. Helder Costa
Helder Costa is yet another player who will undoubtedly depart Leeds.
But, unlike the aforementioned trio, that should happen before his contract expires next summer, as the winger had ruled himself out of contention to Daniel Farke with Wilfried Gnonto and Luis Sinisterra.
Costa, on the other hand, has had to train alone without a club while Gnonto has been returned into the first squad and Sinisterra has finally gotten his wish of staying in a top tier by signing for Bournemouth.
However, according to Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post, Costa is still anticipated to leave soon, maybe via a transfer to Saudi Arabia.
Costa, who spent last season on loan with Al Ittihad, could be set for a return to Saudi Arabia soon, since their transfer window stretches into Europe’s deadline.
A catastrophe signing that all sides hope to forget as soon as possible, but Leeds may have him on their books until 2024 if a deal can’t be done immediately.
Poveda, Ian
Meanwhile, Ian Poveda’s future with the club is far more uncertain.
The small playmaker has unable to live up to the hype that surrounded his prospective move from Manchester City three years ago.
He failed to rip up any trees when on loan at Blackburn Rovers and subsequently Blackpool in the Championship, however he did make an impression in pre-season and has remained on the outskirts of Farke’s team to far.
The potential is undoubtedly there, but the development has so far not gone as planned.
This one is very much up in the air.
Mr. Stuart Dallas
It is still unknown whether Stuart Dallas will be awarded new terms beyond next summer.
Of course, the Whites’ fan favorite suffered a devastating femoral fracture against Manchester City in April 2022 and has yet to return to action since.
As things stand, it’s difficult to say that everything is stacked in Dallas’ favor in terms of renewal, and Leeds fans will be hoping that changes with a full recovery.
Mr. Luke Ayling
Right-back with a long history Luke Ayling is 32 as well, but unlike Dallas, he has a clean bill of health and has started every match for Leeds thus far.
Leeds player since 2016, it is difficult to see that changing next summer, and new terms are likely to be put on the table at some point.
Shackleton, Jamie
Jamie Shackleton’s future at Leeds had also been questioned, but he has forced his way into Farke’s thoughts and now stands every chance of winning a new contract next year following some strong, energetic early-season performances.
Of course, there is still work to be done, but if the utility man continues his present Elland Road revival, there is no reason why a new contract will not be forthcoming.
Mr. Lewis Bate
Who knows if Lewis Bate will put pen to paper right now.
The former Chelsea prospect impressed on loan in the third tier with Oxford United last season, but he was unable to get another temporary stint over the summer and is now looking for possibilities to play this season.
Unless he makes an unexpected entrance into the German’s plans, a summer departure for nothing appears to be on the cards.
Mr. Liam Cooper
Overall, Whites captain Liam Cooper should be given new terms, since his present deal is slated to expire in June.
He is currently on the treatment table after suffering an injury in Leeds’ opener against Cardiff, and while he is getting older, his experience should make him worth keeping around.
Shorter terms than the four-year contract he signed in 2019 are likely to be given at some point this season.
Byram, Sam
The full-back returned to West Yorkshire last month on a one-year contract.
The judgement is still out at this point, but Byram has already proven to be an effective operator at this level and may likely be extended if he has the necessary impact.
